43 critical illnesses · Death

Cegah Famili: A serious illness can affect more than hospital bills.

Recovery has costs beyond hospital bills.

Imagine someone is diagnosed with a serious illness and cannot work for months. The household still needs food, transport and mortgage payments. A medical card and a critical illness lump-sum benefit deal with different financial problems.

PruBSN Cegah Famili is a Shariah-compliant group term takaful plan covering 43 specified critical illnesses and death, subject to the certificate.

Understand your benefits

What does a claim mean?

A qualifying critical illness claim may pay a lump sum when the diagnosis meets the exact contractual definition and severity requirements. Merely seeing a disease name on a list does not guarantee a payment.

This plan is not a medical card. It does not promise reimbursement of all hospital bills.

43 critical illnesses

A lump-sum payment upon meeting the definition of a covered critical illness, including cancer, stroke and heart attack. Certificate definitions and severity requirements apply.

Death benefit

Up to 100% of the sum covered. Critical illness payments reduce the death benefit; these are not two separate full sums.

Angioplasty benefit

For angioplasty and other invasive treatments for coronary artery disease: the lower of 10% of the sum covered or RM25,000. This is not a 100% sum-covered payout.

Who is it for?

For eligible EPF members looking to protect themselves and extend coverage to their spouse and children. Children can be covered from 14 days old to 65 ANB; up to one spouse and ten children per application.

How contributions work

Paid annually from the permitted EPF account. Contributions vary by age, gender, chosen sum covered, and smoking status. Rates are not guaranteed. This is your own savings, and using them reduces your retirement funds.

View the contribution calculator

Who can apply and what does it cost?

The plan is for eligible EPF members, with new applications generally for ages 19-65 ANB and subject to PruBSN assessment. The chosen sum covered is stated as RM10,000-RM200,000 in RM5,000 increments.

Yearly contributions depend on age, gender, sum covered and smoking status, and are not guaranteed to stay the same. Contributions are paid using permitted EPF savings, reducing retirement funds.

A health declaration is required. No medical examination is described in the FAQ, but approval is not automatic.

Contributions, charges and renewal

Annual payment from EPF

The EPF member pays for their own and dependants’ cover. The first contribution is paid through withdrawal from the permitted EPF account. Renewal is automatically deducted while funds are sufficient. Using these funds reduces retirement savings.

Rates and plan charges

Contributions vary by age next birthday (ANB) at each anniversary, gender and sum covered, plus smoking status. Contributions and Tabarru’ are not guaranteed. An upfront Wakalah charge of 17% is included in the contribution; the remaining 83% goes to the Tabarru’ Fund. The PDS states that no commission is paid for this certificate.

If funds are insufficient

PruBSN will notify the certificate holder for further action. Monitor your balance or arrange another suitable payment method with PruBSN. The grace period is 30 days from the contribution due date; cover lapses if payment is not made within it.

Annual renewal

The FAQ states that annual renewal is guaranteed while renewal contributions are paid, up to expiry age 75 ANB. Guaranteed renewal does not mean a fixed contribution rate.

Joining and managing your certificate

FAQ question 12 describes this as a self-enrolment plan offered only through EPF i-Akaun. WhatsApp on this website provides information and guidance; it does not approve applications or collect contributions.

  1. Check eligibility and balance. The EPF member must include themselves in the same application when covering a spouse or children.
  2. Open i-Lindung in EPF i-Akaun.Choose individual, spouse or family cover, then select PruBSN Cegah Famili.
  3. Complete your details and declarations.Provide accurate and complete information; read the PDS and certificate terms before authorising EPF withdrawal.
  4. Await PruBSN assessment. After successful deduction, PruBSN assesses the application. If successful, the e-Certificate is sent to the supplied email and can be checked in PruBSN Touch.

Nomination and claims

The certificate holder may nominate an individual as executor or beneficiary under conditional hibah. Inform the nominee about the certificate. Submit nominations and claims through official PruBSN channels; supporting documents and claim assessment are still required.

Cancellation and free-look period

You may request cancellation in writing directly from PruBSN. Within 15 days of certificate delivery, contributions are refunded under the free-look terms. Later refunds, if any, follow the unused Tabarru’ schedule in the PDS. Cancelling the EPF member’s cover also cancels dependant cover in the same application.

Important terms before you decide

The small print that matters

Angioplasty and specified invasive procedures have a special limit: the lower of 10% of the sum covered or RM25,000. Critical illness payments reduce the death benefit under the same certificate.

Waiting periods apply: 60 days for certain illnesses including cancer and specified heart-related conditions, and 30 days for other listed critical illnesses, subject to terms.

  • A 60-day waiting period applies to heart attack, coronary artery bypass surgery, serious coronary artery disease, angioplasty/related invasive treatments and cancer.
  • A 30-day waiting period applies to all other covered critical illnesses. It runs from certificate commencement, reinstatement or endorsement, whichever is later.
  • Cegah Famili is not a medical card. It does not pay hospital bills like a medical plan; covered critical illness benefits are paid as a lump sum, subject to terms.
  • Critical illnesses caused by pre-existing conditions are excluded. HIV/AIDS exclusions apply except for the conditions stated in the PDS. Death from suicide in the first certificate year is also excluded.

Coverage is annually renewable up to expiry age 75 ANB, subject to contributions and certificate terms. The contribution grace period is 30 days. Read the full documents for all definitions and exclusions.
